THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION UP FRONT

"Without a year of giving up alcohol, I might as well not even try."

That sentence costs people unnecessary months every day. Because with alcohol, and only with alcohol, the MPU recognises two paths. Abstinence is one. Controlled drinking is the other.

WITHOUT ABSTINENCE

Controlled drinking

You keep drinking, but consciously, within clear limits and safely separated from driving. No proof of abstinence, but instead a credible, stable pattern of consumption.

WHO IT'S FOR
A one-off or few incidents, no dependency, rather moderate per-mille values.
WHAT COUNTS
A comprehensible drinking pattern with firm rules and a clear separation of alcohol and driving.
PROOF
No abstinence programme needed. What counts is your credible change in behaviour.
This is for you if: alcohol was never a daily must and you want to keep drinking, but in a controlled way.

Abstinence

The path of complete abstinence, documented through a recognised proof of abstinence. For some cases, it's not optional but a requirement.

WHO IT'S FOR
High per-mille values, repeat cases or signs of alcohol dependency.
WHAT COUNTS
Stable, documented abstinence from alcohol and an honest examination of the underlying causes.
PROOF
Usually 6 to 12 months of documented abstinence via hair or urine testing.
This is for you if: the per-mille values were high, it happened more than once, or there's more behind it than a single slip-up.
Which path applies to you isn't decided by the assessor.

And not by you alone either. It's a psychological assessment of your history, and we work that out together in the free consultation, before you commit to anything. That way you don't lose months on the wrong path.

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION, ANSWERED HONESTLY

Who decides whether you have to live abstinently?

This one question decides months of your life. So here's the clear, honest answer: no marketing spin.

not

Not the assessor

The assessor on the day of your MPU doesn't decide which path you take. They only judge whether the path you've chosen is credible and stable. The course is set long before that.

but rather

A psychologist

A qualified traffic psychologist assesses, based on your history, which path is realistically right for you: per-mille value, occasion, pattern, frequency: all of it factors into this professional judgement.

together

In the consultation, with you

We make this assessment together with you in the free consultation, before you start anything. You get a clear recommendation and an honestly reasoned decision.

Why this matters so much: Anyone who starts a 12-month proof of abstinence on their own, even though controlled drinking would have been enough, often gives away a whole year. And anyone who relies on controlled drinking where abstinence was actually needed risks not receiving a positive assessment report. That's why this assessment comes right at the start.

FROM YOUR ENQUIRY TO THE ASSESSMENT REPORT

How your preparation works.

  1. Free consultation

Free and with no obligation. We look at your case and clarify the key question: controlled drinking or abstinence? Plus a transparent plan at a fixed price: no hidden costs.

  2. Your strategy

Your traffic psychologist builds a plan that fits your path: for controlled drinking, that means building a credible, stable pattern of consumption.

  3. Reinforcing behaviour

We work out your clear drinking rules and a clean separation of alcohol and driving: so they hold up in everyday life and in conversation.

  4. 1:1 processing

We work through the triggering incident honestly and make your change comprehensible: exactly what the assessor wants to hear.

  5. Simulation & MPU

A realistic mock interview takes away the fear. You go into the real assessment prepared and confident.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE INTERVIEW

These are the questions the assessor asks.

Gutachter fragt

Why do you still drink at all, instead of giving it up completely?

A key question for controlled drinking. The assessor wants to hear that you know your limits and consciously manage your drinking, not that you're playing it down. That's exactly the mindset we work on with you.

Gutachter fragt

How do you make sure alcohol and driving stay separate?

Your ability to keep alcohol and driving apart is decisive for controlled drinking. We develop concrete, credible rules with you that really work in everyday life.

Gutachter fragt

What rules have you set for your own drinking?

General good intentions aren't enough. The assessor expects clear, lived limits. We sharpen your rules so that they're coherent and comprehensible.

Gutachter fragt

What triggered the drink-driving offence?

Without honest work on the underlying causes, there's no positive assessment report, whichever path you take. We work through your triggering incident so your change becomes believable.

MPU without abstinence: when controlled drinking works

The MPU without abstinence isn't a trick or a grey area. It's a recognised path that only exists for alcohol. While illegal drugs always require documented abstinence, the alcohol MPU recognises two paths: complete abstinence and controlled drinking. Which path gives you the best chances depends entirely on your personal history.

What does "controlled drinking" mean for the MPU?

Controlled drinking means: you don't give up alcohol completely, but you keep your consumption permanently within conscious, clear limits and safely separate it from driving. For the MPU, you need to credibly demonstrate that this behaviour is stable and won't slide back into old patterns. Proof of abstinence is not required on this path.

Who can take the MPU without abstinence?

The path without abstinence is mainly intended for people who show no alcohol dependency and who had rather moderate per-mille values or a single one-off incident. If the values were very high, there were several incidents, or there are signs pointing to dependency, the assessor will generally require documented abstinence. This classification is a professional case-by-case decision, which is why we address it right at the start.

Who decides which path applies to me?

Not the assessor on the day of your MPU, and not you alone either. It's a psychological assessment of your history, made by a qualified traffic psychologist together with you, in the free consultation. That way you avoid the most costly mistake: losing months on the wrong path.

Why preparation matters so much here

According to official statistics, only around 37% receive a positive assessment report without preparation. With structured 1:1 preparation at ON-MPU, the success rate is over 94%. With controlled drinking, a credible drinking concept and a demonstrable ability to separate drinking from driving matter most: we work on both with you. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS · MPU WITHOUT ABSTINENCE

Everything you need to know.

The most important questions about the path without abstinence, answered honestly.

Can the MPU really be done entirely without abstinence?

With alcohol, yes, for certain cases. Controlled drinking is a recognised path that requires no proof of abstinence. The requirement is that there's no dependency and your case is suitable for it. Whether that applies to you is something we clarify honestly in the consultation.

For whom is the path without abstinence not possible?

With very high per-mille values, repeated drink-driving offences or signs of dependency, there's no way around documented abstinence. And for illegal drugs, the path of controlled use doesn't exist at all.

Who decides whether I have to be abstinent?

Not the assessor on the day of your MPU. They only judge whether the path you've chosen is credible. The classification is made by a qualified traffic psychologist based on your history, together with you in the free consultation.

What does the assessor examine particularly closely with controlled drinking?

Your ability to separate drinking from driving and your self-control: clear, lived drinking rules, safe separation of alcohol and driving, and an honest examination of the triggering incident. That's exactly what we prepare you for.

Is controlled drinking riskier than abstinence?

Not if your case is suitable for it. Then it's the recognised, often faster path. It only becomes risky if controlled drinking is chosen where abstinence was actually needed. That's why we assess this openly before you start.

Can I prepare online as well?

Yes: around 90% of our clients prepare entirely online, with the same qualified traffic psychologist as in person. Flexible, discreet and with no travel needed.
