What counts as combined use?
A combined-use MPU is ordered when several incidents come together. These are the three constellations we see most often.
Classic combined use
Alcohol and an illegal drug together: the most common case. The combination itself is already seen as a particular risk to your fitness to drive.
Multiple substances
Different drugs used in parallel or alternately. The assessor examines especially closely how deeply the use was established.
Double issue
Two separate incidents combined, for example drugs and a criminal offence, or alcohol and points. In that case the report covers both areas.
Does your case feel too complicated? With combined use in particular, a well-thought-out strategy decides between passing and failing. The good news: we've been successfully preparing people for multi-layered cases like this for years.
Two challenges, one strategy.
A combined-use case is more demanding than any single incident, for two reasons. We prepare you for both at the same time. We'll clarify exactly where your case stands in your free consultation.
The double issue
Your report covers two issue areas, and you need to be convincing in both, not just one.
Full abstinence
As soon as a drug was involved, controlled drinking is no longer an option for alcohol. What counts is giving up everything.
How your preparation works.

Start your abstinence proof
For all relevant substances: correct and seamless, through a recognised laboratory, so it actually counts later.
1:1 processing
We work through both issue areas thoroughly and in a connected way, so your story holds together.
Simulation & MPU
A realistic mock interview takes away the fear. You go into the real assessment prepared and confident.
These are the questions the assessor asks.
Why did you combine these substances?
The assessor wants to understand the logic behind it. We work out, honestly and comprehensibly, how the combination came about.
What role did alcohol and drugs each play?
Both areas are examined separately. We prepare you to give a clear, coherent answer for each incident.
What has actually changed in both areas?
What counts here isn't good intentions but a documented change in each area. That's exactly what we make visible and credible.
How do you ensure full abstinence?
The assessor checks your relapse prevention for all substances. We develop stable strategies that fit your life.
They made it.
You will too.

Combined-use MPU: everything you need to know now
The MPU for combined use is the most demanding MPU case, because several incidents come together. Most often it involves the combination of alcohol and an illegal drug, but several drugs, or two separate incidents (for example drugs and a criminal offence), also fall under this. For the assessor, this means examining two areas instead of just one.
What is the "double issue"?
In a combined MPU, the report covers two separate issues, for example one on alcohol and one on drugs. You need to be convincing in both areas. If you only prepare for one incident, you'll fail on the other. That's why a strategy that works through both topics thoroughly and in a connected way is crucial.
Do I need to be abstinent from everything with combined use?
Usually, yes. As soon as a drug was used alongside alcohol, the path of controlled drinking is ruled out. The combination itself is seen as a particular risk. The assessor then expects full abstinence from all substances, usually documented over 12 months, proven through hair analysis or urine screening. You'll find more detail on our pages about the alcohol MPU and the drug MPU.
Is my case too complicated to get a positive assessment report?
No. It's precisely in complex cases that professional preparation makes the biggest difference. According to official statistics, without preparation only around 37% get a positive assessment report; for multi-layered cases the rate is even lower. With structured 1:1 preparation, ON-MPU on the other hand achieves over 94%. We have a clear, proven path even for multi-layered constellations. See how our MPU preparation works →
Everything you need to know.
The most important questions about the MPU for combined alcohol and drug use, answered honestly.
What exactly is a combined-use MPU?
Combined use refers to cases where several incidents come together, most often alcohol and an illegal drug, but also several drugs or two separate incidents such as drugs and a criminal offence. The report then covers both areas.
Do I need to be abstinent from everything with combined use?
Usually yes, typically 12 months of seamlessly documented abstinence from all substances, proven through a recognised laboratory. We'll clarify exactly where your case stands in your free consultation.
What does the double issue mean?
Your report covers two separate issue areas, for example alcohol and drugs. The assessor asks separate questions about each incident, and you need to be convincing in both. We prepare you for both at the same time.
Can I drink in a controlled way if drugs were also involved?
Usually not. The combination itself is seen as a particular risk. The assessor then expects a clear line and full abstinence from all substances.
Is my case too complicated to still get a positive assessment report?
No. Complex cases above all need a well-thought-out strategy that connects both topics. That's exactly what we specialise in, and we've been successfully preparing people for multi-layered constellations like this for years.
Can I prepare for the combined-use MPU online too?
Yes: around 90% of our clients prepare entirely online, with the same qualified traffic psychologist as in person. Especially with intensive preparation, this is often the most flexible option.
Only a single incident?
If only one incident applies to you, you'll find the right page here. We prepare you specifically for it.
