The MPU for drugs follows stricter rules than the alcohol MPU. German law distinguishes between illegal substances such as cocaine, amphetamine, MDMA or heroin, and cannabis, which has followed its own rules since partial legalisation. For you as the person affected, this means: the way back to your licence is clearly structured, but every substance and every case brings its own requirements.
From what point is the MPU for drugs ordered?
Even a single proven instance of using hard drugs such as cocaine, amphetamine, MDMA or heroin can call your fitness to drive into question, even without driving under the influence. If driving under the influence of drugs is added, the authority also checks your so-called ability to separate: can you reliably keep use and driving apart? If this ability is missing, an MPU order almost always follows.
Do I have to be abstinent for the drugs MPU?
Yes. Unlike with alcohol, there's no path of controlled use for illegal drugs. The foundation of any positive assessment report is abstinence proven without gaps for 12 months, documented through hair analysis or repeated urine screenings at a recognised lab. What matters is starting the proof period early and correctly, so it actually counts later.
Do the same rules apply to cannabis?
